Filter ground coffee

Filter ground coffee has a medium-coarse grind, made for a drip filter coffee machine with a paper filter. The water trickles through the coffee in a few minutes, and a medium-coarse grind gives it just enough resistance to extract fully in that time without turning bitter. On this page you will find Gala and Landhaus in 500 g packs, ground at the factory, alongside our own fresh coffee, which we grind to filter size once your order comes in. Looking for single-cup sachets that hang over a mug? Those are our drip coffee bags. How much coffee to use per litre is explained below the products.

Why a filter machine needs a medium-coarse grind

A filter coffee machine needs a medium-coarse grind because gravity alone moves the water through the coffee, with no pressure behind it. The grind decides how quickly that happens. Coffee ground too fine slows the flow: the water sits in the grounds too long, the brew tastes bitter and the paper filter can overflow. Coffee ground too coarsely lets the water run straight through, and the jug comes out weak. Filter grind sits in between: clearly coarser than espresso, finer than the grind for a French press.

How much filter coffee per litre

For a drip filter machine, allow roughly 55 to 65 g of ground coffee per litre of water, or about 7 g for a 125 ml cup. Start in the middle of that range and adjust to taste. Our guide How to brew the most delicious filter coffee walks through the whole process, and How many scoops of ground coffee per cup? turns the grams into scoops if you do not own scales.

What to look for in filter coffee

  • Decaf. Landhaus Entkoffeiniert is the decaffeinated filter coffee among the brands; our own Decaf Espresso and Decaf Special can be ground for filter as well.
  • Origin. Our own coffee includes single origins such as Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Guatemala. Paper holds back most of the oils, so a filter jug shows the differences between origins clearly.
  • Strength with milk. Each coffee is rated from 1 to 13 on our own strength scale. If you take milk, a higher number keeps the coffee noticeable in the mug.
  • Ground to order. Choose the Coffee type 'Freshly ground - Filter' and our own coffee is ground after you order, with the roast date on the label. It is also available as a subscription, every 1 to 8 weeks.

Other grinds and whole beans

Freshbrew machines at the office take exactly the same grind, which is why these coffees also appear under freshbrew coffee. A Chemex has thicker paper and wants a slightly coarser grind: see Chemex coffee. If you grind at home, buy coffee beans and set the grinder to medium-coarse. Every grind we sell is gathered on ground coffee.

Frequently asked questions about filter coffee
What grind do I need for a filter coffee machine?

A filter coffee machine needs a medium-coarse grind: coarser than espresso, finer than coffee for a French press. With that grind the water takes a few minutes to pass through the paper, long enough to draw out the flavour without bitterness. Too fine a grind risks a bitter jug and an overflowing filter; too coarse, and the coffee tastes thin. Everything on this page is ground for drip machines.

How much ground coffee should I use per cup?

Use about 7 g of ground coffee for a 125 ml cup, which comes to 55 to 65 g for a litre of water when you brew a full jug. Taste the first jug and change the amount a few grams at a time until it suits you. If you measure with a scoop rather than scales, How many scoops of ground coffee per cup? explains the conversion.

What is filter coffee?

Filter coffee is coffee made by letting hot water run slowly through ground coffee held in a paper or metal filter, which keeps the grounds out of your cup. Drip coffee machines work this way, and so do hand brewers such as the Chemex and pour-over cones. Compared with espresso or French press coffee, filter coffee is lighter in body and cleaner in taste.

How coarse should coffee be for pour-over?

For pour-over, grind medium-coarse, about the same as for a drip machine or a touch coarser. Because you pour by hand, small corrections are easy: if the water drains quickly and the cup tastes sour, go a little finer; if it stalls in the cone and tastes bitter, go coarser. A Chemex, with its thick paper filters, calls for the slightly coarser Chemex grind.
