Julius Meinl Coffee

The renowned Julius Meinl Mohr has been the company's logo since the beginning and is a globally recognised icon. Representing a young man wearing a fez, it pays homage to the Turkish Ottoman Empire's historical role in bringing coffee to Vienna in 1683. This logo is Julius Meinl Coffee's international trademark. The brand holds a strong position in Europe, especially in Austria, its birthplace, and is also well-established internationally.

Founded in 1862, Julius Meinl is one of the world's oldest coffee roasters, maintaining its reputation for providing top-quality coffees and teas. Their expertise in sourcing green coffee, long-standing relationships with coffee farmers, meticulous bean selection by family members, and traditional Viennese roasting by their specialists all contribute to crafting the perfect cup of coffee.

Since its founding in Vienna, Austria, the fifth generation of the Meinl family continues to actively manage the company today!

The History of Julius Meinl

In 1862, Julius Meinl opened a spice shop in central Vienna, selling green coffee beans, cocoa, tea, spices, rice, and sugar. The shop thrived and expanded rapidly. In 1877, Julius Meinl II revolutionised coffee roasting with his unique process that prevented beans from being exposed to coal gases, ensuring a clean taste and preserving the beans' full natural aroma. These were the first true Julius Meinl coffee beans.

The Growth of Meinl Coffee

With such a significant change, the Meinl family's business experienced a considerable growth spurt. Sales of Julius Meinl coffee beans quickly outgrew a single shop, leading to the establishment of a head office, which moved in 1912 to what is now Julius Meinl Gasse (named after Julius Meinl II) in Vienna's 16th district, where it remains today. By 1913, Julius Meinl had become the largest coffee roaster in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the largest importer of coffee and tea in Central Europe, serving a population of around 50 million!

The First Shop

In the early 1950s, Julius Meinl opened a flagship store in Vienna, still the top location for premium fine food in the city. As the largest coffee roaster in Central Europe, Julius Meinl gained widespread recognition. In 2002, they opened their first coffee house in Chicago. After perfecting the creation of coffee houses, they opened the largest coffee house in the world in 2008, located near the natural history and art museums in Vienna during the European Football Championship. In 2009, Julius Meinl's 1862 PREMIUM coffee was launched for the hospitality industry, allowing restaurants to offer PREMIUM Julius Meinl coffee beans. Now, after more than 150 years, the company continues to grow.
