Coffee, The all time favourite drink around the world

Coffee drinkers know how nice it is to get up early in the morning and walk straight to the coffee maker to switch it on. It's even better if there is a timer on the device that switches it on ten minutes before your alarm goes off. Waking up to the wonderful fragrant aroma awakening your senses is the best start of the day. The cup of coffee is quite normal in everyday life and most people drink the hot drink on a more or less regular basis. After just one cup you feel more energetic and alert. More than five to ten cups of coffee a day can affect your sleep rhythm. You drink coffee almost without thinking about it. But where does it come from and what types are there? Let me take you on a journey and help you understand the history of coffee and the differences between all sorts of coffee. Soooo, ready for coffee 101?

A little sip of coffee history

Originally, coffee was discovered in Ethiopia from where it spread across the Middle East. There are stories about a farmer from the hill country somewhere in Ethiopia who saw his goats skipping in the meadow like real energy bombs after they had eaten the coffee berries. Or the story of the monks who disappointedly threw the rather bitter tasting coffee-beans into the fire and were surprised by the wonderful smell that was released. An extract had to be made from those roasted beans. And this turned out not to be such painstaking work. But there was still some time before the actual drinking of coffee. In any case, it is believed that the Arabs were the first to cultivate the coffee plants. Traders saw the benefits and soon coffee conquered most Islamic countries, despite secrecy and an export ban. The Netherlands also played a role in the spread of coffee plants via Java in Indonesia, a former colony of the Netherlands. Finally, around 1715, France became the major producer in Europe. The settlers and missionaries spread the invigorating potion all over the world. Drinking coffee became more popular than consuming alcoholic beverages.

Arabica and Robusta Coffee

There are two types of coffee beans suitable for consumption. These are the Arabica and the Robusta. The former is loved by coffee roasters and gourmets for its mild and aromatic taste. The coffee plant produces caffeine to protect against parasites. The Arabica beans grow at high altitudes where fewer pathogens can affect the plant, so less caffeine is produced. This is different for the strong-tasting Robusta coffee that grows in lowland areas where it suffers from parasitic attacks. The Robusta coffee contains more caffeine than the Arabica coffee and is therefore better suited to get the sleep out of your body in the morning. Of course, the two beans can be perfectly mixed to obtain a delicious-tasting but strong cup of coffee in various variants. Espresso is one such variety that is widely known. Hot water is forced through a small amount of finely ground coffee beans under high pressure. A good Espresso has a cream layer consisting of fats and sugars and is called *crema*. And one cup can be compared in volume to a double gin, but it is also a drink that you should enjoy. Continuing on from that, you come across the cappuccino that consists of espresso, milk and milk foam in equal parts. Making a good cappuccino is all about using the right technique when frothing milk. It is recommended to use whole milk if you want the best cappuccino. The latte macchiato, in turn, consists of full-fat, organic milk to which a shot of espresso has been added. The variant in which the even finer ground coffee beans are pressed firmly so that the water has more difficulty seeping through the coffee is called ristretto. The end result is a cup of coffee that contains more caramelized sugars and oils. The drink is quite a concentrated espresso with a lot of flavour.

Coffee, healthy and delicious

The number of cups of coffee consumed per day varies from person to person. One cup is enough for Joe, while John easily drinks twelve a day. There are studies that have shown that the cup of coffee fits into a healthy diet and can extend life. But do not drink liters of it because then the beneficial effect will disappear. It's nice to know that nature produces a plant that in its natural purity produces a bean that allows us coffee addicts to enjoy a delicious aromatic cup of comfort. What the future of the drink will look like is coffee grounds, but it will undoubtedly be positive.
