Gorilla at a glance

Gorilla has been the house brand of the German roaster Kaffeegroßrösterei A. Joerges, Kaffee Joerges for short, since 2004. The company began in 1847 as a wholesaler in Frankfurt am Main, the Hühsam family took it over in 1982, and it has roasted in Obertshausen near Frankfurt since 2012. Joerges drum roasts every Gorilla coffee for 12 to 20 minutes at 180 to 220 °C, roasting each bean type separately before blending.

Choosing your Gorilla coffee

Gorilla espresso blends

Gorilla Super Bar Crema is the all-rounder: arabica and robusta, dark roasted, chocolatey and nutty with a touch of honey and a stable, foamy crema, intensity 8 out of 10 on Gorilla's scale (8 out of 13 on ours). Bar Crema Silber, in the silver bag, is the strongest Gorilla: pure robusta from Asia and Africa, dark roasted, nutty and spicy, with very little acidity (10 out of 10, 10 out of 13). Espresso Delicato is dark roasted from South American highland arabica and Asian robusta, chocolatey with soft almond notes (7 out of 10, 7 out of 13). Crema No.1 is a medium-roasted 100% arabica blend, mild and fruity (6 out of 10, 6 out of 13).

Gorilla for milder and longer cups

Gorilla Café Creme is the mildest Gorilla: light-roasted 100% arabica, floral with berry and honey notes (4 out of 10, 4 out of 13), for the filter machine or the bean-to-cup machine. Kaffeehaus Mischung, Gorilla's coffeehouse blend, is a medium-roasted mix of arabica and robusta, nutty and floral (5 out of 10, 5 out of 13), and works in a filter machine, a bean-to-cup machine or a portafilter.

Gorilla decaf espresso

Gorilla Espresso Decaf is dark-roasted, decaffeinated arabica and robusta, full-bodied yet mild, with light chocolate and nut notes (7 out of 10 on Gorilla's scale, 9 out of 13 on ours). It is made for espresso in the evening as well as by day, from a portafilter, bean-to-cup machine or moka pot.

Brewing Gorilla whole beans

Gorilla coffee comes only as whole beans, so grind it just before brewing: fine for a portafilter, a little coarser for a moka pot, medium for the filter machine. A bean-to-cup machine does the grinding for you. More options are under espresso coffee, coffee beans for bean-to-cup machines and decaffeinated coffee beans.

Frequently asked questions about Gorilla coffee
Is there a decaf Gorilla coffee?

Yes: Gorilla Espresso Entkoffeiniert, sold here as Gorilla Espresso Decaf, is a decaffeinated espresso blend of arabica and robusta in whole beans. It is dark roasted and scores 7 out of 10 on Gorilla's intensity scale. Joerges describes it as a full-bodied, mild espresso with light notes of chocolate and nut, for a portafilter machine, a bean-to-cup machine or a moka pot, also in the evening.

Which Gorilla coffee suits my coffee machine?

For a portafilter or bean-to-cup machine, every Gorilla espresso blend works: Bar Crema, Super Bar Crema, Espresso Delicato and Crema No.1. For a moka pot, Joerges recommends Bar Crema, Espresso Delicato and the decaf espresso. Making filter coffee? Choose Kaffeehaus Mischung or Café Creme, which Joerges recommends for the filter machine as well as the bean-to-cup machine. All Gorilla coffee is sold as whole beans.

Who makes Gorilla coffee?

Gorilla coffee is made by Kaffeegroßrösterei A. Joerges GmbH, a family roaster in Obertshausen near Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Gorilla has been its house brand since 2004. Joerges itself dates back to 1847, when it opened as a wholesaler in Frankfurt, and the Hühsam family has run it since 1982. It drum roasts every Gorilla coffee for 12 to 20 minutes at 180 to 220 °C.

Which Gorilla coffees are arabica and which are robusta?

Gorilla Crema No.1 and Café Creme are 100% arabica, and Gorilla Bar Crema is a pure robusta blend. Super Bar Crema, Kaffeehaus Mischung, Espresso Delicato and the decaf espresso combine arabica and robusta. Joerges does not publish the ratios. Every bean type is roasted separately and only blended afterwards, a method known as split roasting.
