What is single origin coffee?

Single origin means the coffee comes from one origin: one country, one region or sometimes one farm. In a blend, beans from different origins are mixed to achieve a consistent taste. Single origin lets the character of the origin speak for itself. Soil, altitude, climate and varietal together shape the flavour profile. That's why an Ethiopian coffee tastes very different from a Brazilian, even if both are 100% arabica.

Flavour profile by origin

Ethiopia: the birthplace of coffee. Floral aromas, fruity acidity and notes of bergamot, jasmine and yellow stone fruit. Yirgacheffe is the best-known region.

Brazil: full and smooth with chocolate, nuts and low acidity. Ideal as an espresso base or as an approachable filter coffee.

Colombia: balanced and accessible, with caramel, red fruit and a mild citrus acidity.

Costa Rica: clean and bright, with honey sweetness, citrus and a refined body.

Peru: soft and mild with cocoa, nuts and a calm acidity. Often organically grown.

Kenya: lively and complex, with blackcurrant, red berries and a wine-like acidity. A true specialty.

Guatemala: rich and spicy with cocoa, hazelnut and a sturdy body.

Nicaragua: soft and balanced with chocolate notes and mild fruit acidity.

Honduras: friendly and balanced with caramel, mild citrus and a round body.

Rwanda: refined and sweet with notes of black tea, citrus and flowers.

India Monsooned Malabar: uniquely yellow-aged by the monsoon winds, full-bodied and spicy with low acidity.

Indonesia: earthy, fuller-bodied coffees with woody and spicy notes. Our Raja Gayo from Sumatra and Bajawa from Flores are typical examples.

Tanzania: bright and lively East African coffee with fruit, flowers and a wine-like acidity.

Which brew method suits single origin coffee?

Single origin coffee shines in brews that don't mask its flavour. Slow brew methods like V60, Chemex or French Press highlight fruity and floral notes beautifully. Espresso works best with fuller origins like Brazil, Guatemala or a darker roast Ethiopian. If you prefer filter coffee, lighter roasts from Ethiopia, Kenya or Costa Rica are a great choice.
