Does the illy Espresso tasting pack contain ground coffee or whole beans?

This pack contains ground coffee: two tins of 250 grams, illy Classico and illy Intenso, ready to use straight away. If you want whole beans to grind yourself, choose the illy Espresso tasting pack in coffee beans. Mixing up beans and ground coffee is the most common ordering mistake, so do check your basket before you pay.

What is the difference between illy Classico and illy Intenso ground coffee?

illy Classico is the standard, red roast: smooth and balanced. illy Intenso is the dark roast, which used to be called illy Zwart, with a more powerful character and a longer finish. It is the same 100 percent Arabica blend, just roasted darker. With this tasting pack you taste both roasts side by side without having to buy two full packs.

Which coffee makers can I use this ground illy coffee in?

This illy is finely ground for espresso. According to the product information you can use it in an espresso machine, a moka pot and a filter coffee maker. Never put ground coffee in the bean hopper of a bean to cup machine, because that hopper is only for whole beans. If your bean to cup machine has a separate ground coffee chute, use that one and follow the manual of your machine.

How much ground illy coffee do I use per cup?

For a double espresso, count on around 16 to 20 grams of ground coffee. If you are making filter coffee, 5 to 8 grams per cup is a good starting point. If your cup tastes too bitter, let it run through for a shorter time or use a slightly lower dose; if it is too sour, use a higher dose and hotter water. With 2 x 250 grams you get around 25 to 30 double espressos.

How do I store an opened tin of illy ground coffee?

Close the tin properly after opening and store it in a cool, dark and dry place. Ground coffee loses its aroma faster than whole beans, so preferably use up an opened tin within a few weeks. Do not store the coffee in the fridge: moisture and odours from the fridge come at the expense of the flavour.
