Café du Jour: a nature-conscious choice

Café du Jour makes nature-conscious choices. Our nature-conscious products, for example, are grown without artificial fertiliser, chemical pesticides or genetically modified organisms. Their farmers and growers let nature do as much of the work as possible, with as little interference as possible.  

Nature-conscious coffee and tea are grown without chemical crop protection, so the plants have to "defend" themselves, for example by producing their own anti-fungal substances.

What makes a product nature-conscious?

The products we list as nature-conscious are:

• Produced without the use of artificial fertiliser.
• Produced without the use of chemical pesticides.
• Produced without the use of genetic modification.
• Produced without the use of growth hormones.
• Produced without the use of antibiotics.

Not every product made from these raw materials can be labelled organic, because we process them ourselves when we roast, blend or grind them.

Towards a cleaner future

More and more of our products come from nature-conscious agriculture without artificial fertiliser or pesticides. We keep working to improve our processes and reduce our impact on the environment. These are some of the measures we have taken.

• We generate our own electricity with solar panels 
  Making our products takes a lot of energy, which is why we have installed solar panels on the roof of our warehouse.
• Products nearing their best-before date are donated
  Every year Café du Jour has products that can no longer be sold, either because the season is changing or because they are close to their best-before date. Fortunately, we rarely have to throw products away. Some are given to people in need or to foundations that help in developing countries. We also add products to regular orders as a little extra for the customer, and others are sold at a discount or below market value. 
• Shipping with as little CO2 as we can
  For small parcels we prefer carriers that take the environment into account, for example with bicycle delivery or electric vehicles. For parcels over 10 kg we use a carrier that offsets its CO2 emissions.
• We reuse packaging material
  We do use packaging material to protect products in transit, but to limit the impact on the environment we reuse the boxes our own supplies arrive in as packing material. So we recycle boxes to fill boxes!
