The Gene Cafe CBR-101 Coffee Roaster

The Gene Cafe CBR-101 is renowned as an exceptional electric roaster, capable of holding about 250 grams of unroasted coffee beans. It's ideal for both novice and seasoned home roasters. With its user-friendly time and temperature controls and a fully transparent roasting chamber, you can jump into your first roasting session with ease. As you grow more skilled, you'll start crafting your own roast profiles. The CBR-101 features a unique, downward-rotating swirl drum that ensures an even roast every time.

Usage Tips:

  • You'll quickly notice a tendency to roast too dark. Avoid this as the best flavors are lost in darker roasts. Additionally, dark roasted beans are harmful to fully automatic coffee machines.
  • Always stay close to the roaster for fire safety reasons and to listen for the first and/or second crack during roasting.
  • Due to moisture loss during roasting, you'll end up with about 20% less weight in roasted beans compared to the unroasted beans you started with.
  • Operate under an extractor hood or near an open window to minimize smoke production.
  • Use 250 grams of unroasted beans per batch. Using less will shorten the roasting time, while using more will extend it. Keep this in mind when trying to replicate a roast profile.
  • Begin with a temperature of around 235 degrees Celsius and experiment from there for subsequent roasts. For instance, with more experience, you can start at the highest temperature and reduce it progressively after the first crack.
  • Try to cool the beans as quickly as possible post-roast by, for example, shaking them in a sieve.
  • Clear out the chaff from the roaster after each session. Every 20 roasts, remove the fleece trap and clean it with warm water (ensure it dries thoroughly). While leftover grease generally doesn't affect roast quality, in extreme cases, cleaning it is crucial to avoid fire hazards.
  • After roasting, wait at least 4 to 24 hours before brewing. The optimal flavor profile typically emerges between days 3 and 5.
  • We offer a wide range of unroasted coffee beans for you to explore.

FAQ
Customer Questions
Does this coffee roaster produce a lot of smoke and how should I best deal with it?
As with any coffee roaster, the use of the Gene Café CBR101 produces smoke, especially with darker roasts. We recommend using the device under an extractor hood or near an open window to ensure proper smoke ventilation. This way, you ensure a pleasant user experience, even when roasting indoors.
When is the best time to use freshly roasted coffee for the optimal flavour result?
We recommend waiting at least 4 to 24 hours after roasting before using the coffee. In our experience, the coffee beans are at their best between day 3 and day 5 after roasting. That is when the flavours are at their finest.
How many coffee beans can I roast at a time with the Gene Café CBR101 coffee roaster?
With the Gene Café CBR101 coffee roaster, you can roast between 50 and 250 grams of green coffee beans per batch. We recommend using 200 grams each time for the most consistent result. Fewer beans will shorten the roasting time, while more beans will extend it – keep this in mind if you want to maintain a fixed roasting profile.
How do I clean and maintain the Gene Café CBR101 for long-term use?
After each roast, we recommend removing the loose chaff from the roaster. Every 20 roasts, take out the chaff collector and clean it with warm water. Allow it to dry thoroughly before placing it back. Any greasiness usually does not affect the quality of the roast, but in cases of severe contamination, cleaning is important for safety.
Do I need to supervise the Gene Café CBR101 during the roasting process?
Yes, we recommend always using the coffee roaster under supervision. It is important to be present during roasting, both for safety reasons (fire hazard) and to hear crucial moments such as the first and second ‘crack’ of your coffee beans. This way, you have full control over the roasting process and achieve the best result.
